Unhappy ketosis

Hi ! I am myself not on Atkins, but I am doing the food for a friend who is. I have a queation re ketosis. He has been faithfully following induction and is losing weight consistantly (he needs to lose about 100lbs), but the strips are not changing colour - What gives?

Re: ketosis

It could be that he has a batch of bad strips, he's exercising so much that he's losing ketones through perspiration and respiration, he has a chemical/hormonal thing going on (women are notorious for not being able to have ketosis reflect on the strips at certain times of their cycle,) or he's not really in ketosis. (Excessive protein can be converted to energy in lieu of fat stores; is he eating excess protein?)

Remember that ketosis isn't the goal...weight loss is. And, you've said that he's losing weight. So, you've got him on the right track!

I hope you (or your friend) stick around!

Re: ketosis

Agree completely. I have never used the strips, so can never tell if I am in ketosis except for the weight loss, and a few other physical signs.

Re: ketosis

I never used the strips either, but in early Induction, my urine was strong (affectionately known around here as "Ketopee") and a feeling I had bad breath so I rinsed a lot with mouthwash! Mostly the 5 pounds per week I was losing for the first 2 weeks proved I must have been in ketosis!

Good luck to your friend!

Toni
