Low Carb Bread Comparisons
So, I have tried both the Julian Bakery bread and now another bread - by Francis Simun bakery located in Dallas Texas. I like both, but here's the info -
The Julian bread is darker, and tastes more like a whole-wheat loaf. It has 8 slices, and each slice is 1 net carb. It toasts very slowly compared to what I normally do. The Francis bread is lighter, and has about 17 slices per loaf. It has 1.5 net carbs per slice. It toasts up beautifully and holds up well to a tomato sandwich. I prefer the Francis bread. In addition, they offer tortillas, bagels, pizza dough, and hot dog or hamburger buns. I don't know the carb count of those offerings though. Both bakeries are similar in price, with the Julian bread being $7.99 and the Francis bread being $6.99. I would recommend either, but like I said I liked the Francis bread better. Here's the websites: Julian Bakery Francis Simun Bakery

Re: Low Carb Bread Comparisons
I was in San Diego last week (home of the Julian Bakery) but without transportation at my daughter's house and with everyone working some of the time and grandkids' schedules, we never got to the Julian bakery.
In reading the post, 17 slices compared to 8 makes the Francis bread a better value. I'm dying for a bagel! Somehow, daikon, cucumber and zucchini slices don't QUITE make the grade as a salmon creamed cheese delivery system! As an OWL I know I could manage it fine since I have a 5 gram low carb tortilla occasionally with no problem. I'll check out their website. Thanks for the recommendation. Re: Low Carb Bread Comparisons
FYI:
I just went to my freezer and counted the number of slices in a loaf of the Julian bread. I counted 14 slices (not 8).

Re: Low Carb Bread Comparisons
Hello,
The fiber content is great on the Julian bread. Do you think it is okay for me to have 2 or 3 slices a day? It is so good! I have been on low-carb for a month. Thanks Judynativetexan |

Re: Low Carb Bread Comparisons
That's a good question I can't answer. IF it has one carb per slice, and you are a month in, you might have transitioned to OWL, added veggies and are adding in other things? I'd eat one slice/day for a while to make sure there is nothing your body decides to react to. Then maybe add the 2nd slice.
But I'll leave that up to our resident experts here! Some say don't add any bread until later, but in reading the "new" Atkins advice on their website, there is a lot more "mix and matching" going on (so they can sell you the bars and shakes, I suspect!) Good luck, and I hope Buffenie or someone can answer your question. To me, if the Atkins folks can say one of their snack bars is OK and net out sugar alcohols, a high fiber bread product with only 1 gram of carbs surely is more filling and more nutritious and ought to be able to be added!! But that is just my humble opinion... Toni Last edited by reader; 09-23-2009 at 07:43 PM. Reason: removing |

Re: Low Carb Bread Comparisons
I just saw your help request, Toni. I'm glad you figured it out!As far as the Julian Bakery LC bread - the ingredients (Whole grains, bean, seeds of *kamut®, *spelt, *wheat, *rye, *millet, lentils, eggs, soy protein, flax, sesame, *quinoa, *amaranth, wheat gluten, 7 grain flakes, oat bran, sea salt & yeast. *Organically Grown) except the wheat, are really pretty good. Notice that there's no sugar or filler crap contributing to the carb count. I think, since it's so bulky, it would be okay to have 2 slices per day. Just be sure to continue to eat your vegetables and proteins -- this shouldn't be your primary source of carbohydrate! Monitor how your body handles it. If you find that you're craving more sugar/starch, or if you have crashes afterward, cut back. Be your own experiment!
